While no two sources seem to agree on its exact borders, the South Bay of Southern California conservatively occupies the area south of Los Angeles International Airport down to the Palos Verdes peninsula and extends east to the 110 freeway.
Due to its ranging from the aerospace-dominated northern section down to the nautical shipping center of the Port of Los Angeles, this area of approximately 800,000 residents is one of Southern California's most varied in character and flavor.
While South Bay is probably best known for the "beach cities" and their laid-back lifestyle, there's a lot more to it than just beach volleyball.
A few areas of the South Bay are part of the larger Long Beach oil-refining zone, helping to supply the bulk of Southern California's fuel supply. The automotive industry, including both Honda in Torrance and Tesla in Hawthorne, still maintains a huge presence. And the beach cities themselves aren't just about the beach, as they are recently making a name for themselves in fine dining.
